Transnistria Tour from Chisinau in just one day!!!

Travel to Transnistria: “The Country that Doesn’t Exist”

TIRASPOL is the biggest city in Transnistria. The city is located on the eastern bank of the Nistru River.

In the morning, you will discover Tighina Fortress located in Tighina town and built in the 15th century by the prince of Moldova, Stephen the Great. Originally built as a small wooden fort, it was later fortified in stone by the prince of Moldova, Petru Rares.

Occupied by the Ottomans in 1538 (in a campaign led by the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent), the fort was strengthened in 1541 and became the center of an Ottoman “raya” (in which were included the surrounding Moldavian villages). In the 18th century, the fort was strengthened by Moldovan craftsmen under the direct supervision of Dimitrie Cantemir.

Tighina Fortress is an architectural ensemble of an irregular quadrilateral plan, surrounded by wide walls, 2-3 meters thick, made of limestone and brick.

Because Tiraspol has a high density of population in the south and has virtually no borderlines with the adjacent localities, the concept of Tiraspol-Bender agglomeration has appeared; together these two cities account for approximately 350.000 common inhabitants. Bender is located on the right side of the Nistru River, and since 1992 it has been under the governance of Tiraspol. These two neighboring towns are linked to each other through trolleybus lines and minibusses.

Tiraspol’s’ population consists of the following ethnic groups: Russians (41%), Ukrainians (33%) Moldovans (15%), Bulgarians (1,55%), and others (15%). Tiraspol is a regional hub of light industry, as well as furniture and electrical goods production.
